Honeyeaters and bottlebrushes

Photo: New Holland Honeyeater.
There are 76 species of honeyeater in Australia forming the largest family of Australian passerines. They occur all over the continent and are specialist nectar feeders, often feeding on Callistemon sp., also known as bottlebrush, a genus which itself comprises around 50 species all of which are endemic to Australia. Honeyeaters also occur in other parts of the south west Pacific including two species in New Zealand. This post is a celebration of some of the fabulous honeyeaters I have seen on my travels down under, with a nod to the bottlebrushes as well!
